lagi memegang rotan untuk memukul istrinya ssebagai hukuman karena
ketidaktaatannya, atau mungkin sedang melakukan kesalahan.
Telah diriwayatkan bahwa
pada waktu itu, Syuriah Al Qadhi bertemu dengan Asy-Syu'bi. Mereka
tampah begitu gembira dan ceria, tak nampak guratan kekesalan.
"Wahai saudaraku, apa rahasianya sehingga membuah wajahmu selalu tampak ceria, "tanya Syuriah.
"Selama 20 tahun ini aku tidak melihat sesuatu yang membuatmu marah terhadap istriku, "jawab Asy-Syu'bi.
"Bagaimana itu bisa terjadi?" kata Syuriah setengan tak percaya.
"Sejak malam pertama aku
bertemu dengan istriku. Aku melihat padanya kecantikan yang menggoda
dan kecantikan yang sangat luar biasa.
Kemudian aku berkata
kepada diriku sendiri : Aku akan bersuci dan salat dua rakaat sebagai

tahun ketika Syu'bi pulang dari majelis Qadha (peradilan), tiba-tiba ada
seorang wanita tua di dalam rumahnya.
"Siapa dia? "tanya Syu'bi.
"Dia adalah ipar perempuanku, "jawab istrinya.
"Aku senang bertemu dengannya, "jawab Syu'bi.
Kemudian, Syu'bi duduk
berhadapan dengan tamu tersebut. Tak berapa lama kemudian, tamu itu
mengucap salam dan dibalas salam pula oleh Syu'bi.
"Bagaimanaendapatmu tentang istrimu, "tanya tamu tersebut.
"Dia adalah sebaik-baik istri, "ujar Syu'bi.
"Ketahuilah, bila kamu meragukan istrimu, maka hendaklah kamu ambil cambuk, "kata tamu itu.
"Tenang wahai ibu,
sungguh aku telah mendidik dan mengajari beberapa adab dengan baik dan
aku melatihnya untuk hidup secara baik sehingga tidak perlu
mencambuknya, "jelas Syu'bi.
